Why Gaincraft

What else you could do, described fairly.

Five alternatives, including the one most retailers choose, which is nothing. For each: what it genuinely does well, what it structurally cannot do, and where we fit. If a section reads as a caricature of something you already run, tell us and we will fix it.

No competitor is named on this page. These are categories, and each of them is the right answer to some question.

Alternative 01

Mystery shopping and retail audit

What it does well

  • Standards compliance, measured cheaply and reliably: store condition, signage placement, greeting within a window, whether the loyalty programme was mentioned.
  • A trained shopper grading binary, observable items against a checklist produces a genuinely useful estate-wide estimate.
  • It works in any store, in any state, with no hardware, no integration and no legal review. That is a real advantage and it explains the category’s longevity.

What it structurally cannot do

  • Coverage. Two visits a store a month is roughly twenty-four conversations a year against a floor that has thousands, so any individual associate may never be observed at all.
  • Individual coaching. A shop grades the store, and the associate who happened to serve the shopper is not necessarily the one whose behaviour is costing conversions.
  • Authenticity. A shopper with a script is a different conversation to a couple with a real budget, and the behaviours most worth measuring are the ones staging distorts most.
  • Latency. A shop conducted in week two and reported in week six describes a trading period that has finished.

Where Gaincraft fits

We measure the conversation; mystery shopping measures the environment. Most retailers should keep a reduced standards audit for the physical items a conversation system cannot see, and move the conversation-quality budget to something with coverage. This is also the line our platform fee is designed to sit inside.

Alternative 02

Learning platforms and training providers

What it does well

  • Content, structure, certification and compliance tracking. A good platform gets the right module to the right person, records completion, and satisfies an auditor.
  • The best training providers in premium retail are genuinely excellent at the teaching event — the launch day, the brand immersion, the role-play workshop.
  • They are the only credible mechanism for knowledge that must be identical everywhere: product facts, brand heritage, safety, compliance scripts.

What it structurally cannot do

  • Transfer. Completion and quiz data measure attendance, not whether the behaviour reached a customer, and no LMS can see the floor.
  • Reinforcement. Teaching lands once, then decays, and a platform with no view of the counter cannot know which associate needs which reminder tomorrow.
  • Personalisation from evidence. Assigning the next module is guesswork without behaviour data, however sophisticated the learning path.
  • Ramp measurement. Time-to-productivity can be inferred from sales, but not attributed to which specific behaviours a new hire has not yet acquired.

Where Gaincraft fits

We do not replace a learning platform and we integrate with the habit your staff already have. Training delivers the teaching; we measure whether it arrived and reinforce it daily with a clip from your own floor. Where brand partners co-fund education, we give them the transfer evidence they have never had.

Alternative 03

In-store video and footfall analytics

What it does well

  • Traffic, dwell, queue length, zone heat, conversion-to-footfall and staffing against demand. These are real operational questions and video answers them well.
  • Deployment is mature, the hardware is often already installed for loss prevention, and the operational payback on labour scheduling alone can be substantial.
  • It sees things audio cannot: whether a customer was approached at all, how long they waited, whether the floor was covered at 6pm on a Saturday.

What it structurally cannot do

  • Content. Video knows a conversation lasted eleven minutes; it does not know whether a budget was framed, an occasion was asked about, or a second item was ever mentioned.
  • Coaching specificity. "Dwell increased" is not something an associate can act on tomorrow morning.
  • A lighter legal footprint. Camera-based systems frequently involve facial or body analytics, which is a heavier biometric review than audio scoring with no image sensor and no voiceprint.

Where Gaincraft fits

The two are complementary and answer different questions. Video tells you whether the customer was served; we tell you how. Retailers already running footfall analytics usually have the staffing question answered and the conversation question entirely open.

Alternative 04

Conversation tools built for field sales and contact centres

What it does well

  • The category is mature and technically strong: transcription, talk-ratio analysis, objection detection, CRM writeback, deal-risk scoring. For calls and video meetings it is excellent.
  • It has genuinely changed how B2B sales teams coach, and the underlying speech technology is often better than anything a newer entrant will build.
  • Where a retailer runs an outbound clienteling desk or a call centre, these tools are the right answer for that channel.

What it structurally cannot do

  • Capture a room. A single remote channel with a known speaker on each end is a different acoustic and legal problem to two or four people at a counter in a busy hall.
  • Handle counter consent. The consent model in these products assumes a call with a disclosure at the start; a semi-public retail floor needs signage, a physical notice, a verbal line and a zone map.
  • Score a retail conversation. A taxonomy built around discovery calls, pipeline stages and objection handling does not describe a step-up conversation, an attach offer or a family purchase.
  • Speak the floor’s language. Multilingual code-switching inside single sentences is the normal case in a retail conversation and an edge case in a sales call.

Where Gaincraft fits

If your question is about calls, use those products. Ours exists because in-person retail is a different capture problem, a different consent problem and a different behaviour taxonomy — and because attribution by seat and shift, rather than by voiceprint, matters more when the speakers are hourly staff.

Alternative 05

Doing nothing

What it does well

  • It is free, it carries no legal review, no hardware, no change management and no risk of a failed programme. That is a stronger position than vendors admit.
  • Experienced store leadership genuinely does coach well, and in a small estate with low turnover and long-tenured staff, informal coaching can be close to sufficient.
  • It avoids the real cost of a badly implemented measurement programme, which is a floor that has decided management does not trust it.

What it structurally cannot do

  • Scale past the manager’s attention. Standing at a counter for two hours is the coaching that works, and it covers perhaps four people a week.
  • Retain the skill. When a top performer resigns, an undocumented method leaves with them on a fortnight’s notice.
  • Give evidence for a people decision. Promotion, commission disputes and performance management run on recollection, which serves neither the company nor the associate.
  • Answer the review question. When conversion moves, nobody can say whether it was footfall, assortment, pricing or how the floor sold.

Where Gaincraft fits

For a small estate with stable, senior staff, doing nothing may be the right call and we will say so. Where it stops working is at scale, at turnover, or the first time an executive is asked to explain a conversion movement with evidence.

If one of these is the right answer for you, we will say so.

The discovery call establishes which of the five you already run and whether adding us to it is genuinely worth your quarter.
